Renee Magritte (1898 – 1967) was a Belgian Surrealist artist. He became well known for a number of witty and thought-provoking images. His work challenges observers' preconditioned perceptions of reality. One of his most famous is the sillouhette of a figure in a Bowler hat with a patch of blue sky with clouds in the space where his face would be. MoMA's umbrella incorporates Magritte's playful imagery giving dreary rainy days a bright patch of blue sky!
